Ofsted considers changes to nursery chain inspections

By Rachel LawlerOfsted early years inspections chains

Ofsted is considering changing the way that it inspects chains of early years settings.

Speaking at the launch of Ofsted’s , her majesty’s chief inspector Amanda Spielman said: “…more and more nurseries are joining large national and international providers, but are inspected individually. These nurseries are more likely to be rated outstanding, which suggests that strong practice can be shared effectively across the whole nursery chain. There may be benefits from a different inspection model that would allow individual inspections of nurseries to be bought together and features across the whole chain to be analysed.â€

Currently, early years providers that operate across multiple sites must apply to Ofsted to add additional sites to their registration. Each of these sites is then inspected and graded separately – Ofsted has been in touch with the Alliance to confirm that this will not change, although there may be additional analysis of these settings.
