Early Years Workforce Commission launches

By Rachel Lawlerreading to children

The Alliance has joined forces with a group of early years organisations to form the Early Years Workforce Commission.

The commission will review the challenges currently facing the sector and look to develop potential solutions, through two evidence sessions – one focused on recruitment and retention and another on training and CPD.
Its recommendations will be shared in a report later this year, addressing:

  • basic training for those joining the sector
  • the quality and take-up rates of CPD
  • the implications of low-pay
  • recruitment and retention
  • the crucial role of the sector in wider society

The Alliance is working with CACHE, CEEDA, Early Education, PACEY, TACTYC, LEYF, NDNA, the Education Policy Institute, Voice the Union and the Sutton Trust on the commission.

Solutions-focused plan
Julie Hyde, executive director of education and training at NCFE and CACHE, said: “We hope to be able to put forward a solutions-focused plan, with key recommendations for the Government and others, to support the early years workforce be recognised as the highly professional, talented and committed individuals they are. Ultimately, we want to ensure the long-term sustainability of this sector, which plays such a crucial role in our society and economy.â€

“To enable us to develop a strong and credible set of recommendations, we will be working closely with organisations across the sector and beyond and we would encourage anyone who wants to be involved to share their ideas.â€
